Making Decisions in Uncertain Times

More often than not, we fail to recognize how our vulnerabilities are exacerbated in seasons of transition. During these times, it's normal to feel excitement, uncertainty, and even a touch of apprehension. But remember, as frightening as it may feel, change can be an opportunity for growth and transformation. So, here are six ways that you can approach making difficult decisions:

  • Pause and Reflect. When faced with a significant life shift, it's essential to take a step back and reflect on what truly matters to you. Ask yourself: What are my core values? What do I want to achieve? What are my strengths and passions? Center yourself on what you know to be true. As a Christian, I pause to recognize the reality I’m facing and bring my concerns to God through prayer. The Lectio 365 app is a great resource that helps us focus on being present with God.

  • Seek Wise Counsel. Remember, you don't have to navigate change alone—contact mentors, friends, or family members who can offer guidance and support. Seek out individuals who have experienced similar shifts or possess wisdom in the areas you're exploring. Their insights and perspectives can provide invaluable advice as you weigh your options and make informed decisions.

  • Embrace the Unknown. Change often brings uncertainty, and it's tempting to shy away from the unknown. But instead of fearing the unfamiliar, embrace it as an opportunity for growth. Often, certainty can impede our growth. Because I’m that certainty, an unhealthy comfort can take root. An unexpected event can awaken us to what God may be doing in our lives. Approach the decision-making process with curiosity and openness. Explore new possibilities and be willing to step outside your comfort zone. Remember, the most profound personal growth occurs when we challenge ourselves and embrace the unknown with courage and resilience.

  • Remember, Baby steps. Big decisions can be overwhelming, so break them down into smaller, manageable steps. Set achievable goals and create an action plan. As you move forward, celebrate each milestone along the way. You build momentum and confidence by taking gradual steps, making the decision-making process more manageable and rewarding.

  • Embody Flexibility. In times of change, rigidity can hinder progress. Instead, cultivate a mindset of flexibility and adaptability. Understand that the path forward may not always be linear, and there might be detours along the way. Embrace the unexpected as an opportunity to learn and recalibrate. Adjust your plans as needed, and remember that each decision is a stepping stone toward your desired destination.

  • Trust Your Gut. While seeking counsel and advice is essential, don't forget to trust your intuition. Your gut instinct often provides valuable insights and nudges you toward the right decision. Tune in to your inner voice, and pay attention to your emotions and physical sensations. Permit yourself to follow your intuition, even when it doesn't align with conventional wisdom. Remember, the best decisions often come from a place of inner knowing.
